A trip to the EP library

From April 8, 2013

We went on a field trip to the EP library today to get a tour and learn about My Book Day which is coming up in May. After learning about how the library words, we walked around to see the books, the help desks, the checkout stations, and best of all, the automated sorting machine, which scans the books and puts them on the correct cart to be re-shelved throughout the library. Then we listened to a silly story about the library and learned a song that we'll be singing with all the other first graders in all of Eden Prairie on My Book Day.

Growing caterpillars

Our caterpillars are growing more and more every day! They are almost getting too big for their jar! Soon they will start making cocoons and we'll transfer them to the butterfly cage. What an exciting process!

Telephone reading

From April 11, 2013

Every day during guided reading the kids that work with me must immediately start reading a book from their book box to themselves with a telephone. I listen to each one individually for about 30 seconds to help coach them and check in on their fluency. They do such a great job and are becoming such wonderful readers!

Snowball fight!

From April 11, 2013

Who can believe that we had a snowstorm in April...and it stuck! In honor of the new snowfall, we did a special greeting today using paper snowballs with our names on them. The kids got to have a snowball fight with the paper snowballs and when we were done they greeted the person whose name was on the snowball that they picked up. We hope we don't have to do another one of these until next winter!

Observing caterpillars

From April 10, 2013

We started a new unit in science this week learning about life cycles and insects...and our caterpillars arrived yesterday! We got to observe and draw them today through magnifying glasses. They grew so much in just one day we're excited to see what will happen next!

Mini-maestro

From April 10, 2013

When a student makes it a whole morning or afternoon wearing the Super Espanol badge and only speaking spanish, they win a prize. One of the more popular prizes is to be the mini-maestro and help out the teacher all day. Jack P. chose that yesterday and Teagen chose it today. I've got some great future teachers in my class!

Sr. Schack's snake game

From April 9, 2013

Every other day when Sr. Schack comes to morning meeting, he shares with us a bit of his Spanish culture when he teaches us new games and songs. Today we learned and sang a new song about a silly snake and walked around the room connected to our classmates!

Crazy sentences

From March 22, 2013

As we learn about subjects and verbs, we worked with a partner to create crazy sentences. First we made a sentence about an animal doing something normal. Then, Srta. Palmer mixed up the subjects and the verbs to create sentences where lions are going to McDonalds and monkeys are in space. We worked with that same partner to illustrate those crazy sentences and they turned out great!

Unidos contra el hambre!

From March 21, 2013

The day finally arrived! After working so hard to raise money for food to send to the Dominican Republic, the green team finally got to pack the food up so it can be shipped. Our school raised over $8,000 and we were able to pack thousands of bags of food to share with our hungry friends.

We welcomed back an old member of our class this week after he moved away for a couple months. We are all so excited he came back to join us again and he even brought us all a special snack!

Sharing stories

From March 15, 2013

As students start finishing and publishing their very own stories, they are given the chance to share them with the class. They get to sit in my teacher chair and read their story to the class. I have some wonderful and proud writers in my class!

Beautiful weavings

From March 13, 2013

When I picked the class up from art today they were all so eager to show me their beautiful weavings that they had finished making. Later they will be taken off of the looms so that they can add a hanger and beads so that it is ready to take home and share with everyone.

Magic flip books!

As we are learning about the months of the year and the different holidays that we celebrate during those different months, we started making magic flip books to present them. Open the book to see what we do to celebrate during each month of the year!

Leer juntos es mejor!

From March 6, 2013

Our partners from Sra. Viveros' fourth grade class came over again today to read with us. They brought tons of Dr. Seuss books and we read them together. It is so much fun reading with an older buddy!

Anticipation Guide

From February 28, 2013

Before reading a story to learn about where our food comes from, we did a physical anticipation guide to peak our interest in the topic. Kids chose whether or not they agreed or disagreed with each statement about food and had to go to one side of the room depending on their opinion. While we read the story, we were able to verify the facts and correct our misconceptions about where our food comes from.

Drum/Percussion show!

From February 15, 2013

We got a special treat today when Sr. Yoerks came into our class to give us a presentation about his drums and percussion instruments. After performing a couple songs for us, each student got the chance to play a percussion instrument with the group and then have a solo!
